Fire Reported Aboard Vessel Near Oman in Strait of Hormuz
The agency said the master of another vessel had reported seeing a ship engulfed in flames in the strategic waterway. The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear.
Authorities had not confirmed the condition of the affected vessel’s crew, and no assessment of possible damage or environmental consequences was available when the report was issued.
UK Maritime Trade Operations urged ships operating in the area to navigate cautiously and report any suspicious activity as the incident was being investigated.
The fire comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for international energy shipments and other commodities.
The strategic passage has remained a major point of contention following the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and US-linked positions across the region before the parties reached a ceasefire agreement in April.
In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding intended to address freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. However, progress toward implementing the arrangement stalled amid disagreements over security arrangements in the waterway.
The latest incident adds to concerns surrounding maritime safety in the region as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate. Further information about the cause of the fire, the vessel involved and the condition of those aboard had not been released.
