IRGC Navy Asserts Continuous Monitoring of Strait of Hormuz
Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the IRGC Navy, made the remarks on Monday shortly after the commencement of a military drill in the waterway that links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The strait is widely regarded as a crucial artery for global energy shipments.
According to official statements, the exercise has been characterized as “combined, live and purpose-driven” drills. Tangsiri emphasized that the force possesses “full 24-hour intelligence dominance” over the Strait of Hormuz. He further explained that monitoring operations extend across multiple domains, describing surveillance as “comprehensive at surface, aerial and even sub-surface levels.”
He stated that such oversight guarantees the “safe passage of vessels” transiting the corridor, noting that more than 80 oil tankers and container ships navigate the strait daily, representing a substantial share of international maritime commerce.
The ongoing maneuvers are taking place both in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Tangsiri referred to the islands situated within these waterways as “impregnable fortresses,” asserting that safeguarding them—as well as the broader maritime zone—is a core duty of the IRGC Navy.
He added that protecting the islands, along with the entire Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, “is the responsibility of the IRGC Navy,” which carries out “routine annual exercises to ensure security” in the area. While the drills form part of a regularly scheduled program, he highlighted their distinctiveness, citing the “tactical maneuvers and equipment being employed,” and indicating that certain capabilities involved have yet to be officially revealed.
Tangsiri also pointed to the “rapid and decisive response” capability of operational units as central to the current exercise. He explained that rapid-response teams routinely train to board, inspect, or confiscate “unauthorized vessels” operating within the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
Earlier the same day, the IRGC announced that the drill—titled “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz”—is being conducted under the field supervision of Mohammad Pakpour. The stated objectives include evaluating combat readiness among naval units, testing defensive strategies and contingency plans for reciprocal military measures in the event of security threats, and assessing the strategic leverage of the Islamic Republic across the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
