Italy's PM Arrives in Seoul for High-Stakes Talks

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni touched down in Seoul for high-stakes talks with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, an official statement confirmed Sunday.

Prior to Monday's scheduled summit with Lee, Meloni paid respects at the Seoul National Cemetery on Sunday, which honors the soldiers who died during the Korean War, Meloni's office announced.

Lee will receive Meloni for formal bilateral discussions Monday, representing the first official visit by an Italian prime minister to South Korea in nearly two decades and the inaugural visit by a European leader since Lee took office last June.

Following the negotiations, both leaders are anticipated to formalize multiple agreements.

South Korea stands as Italy's fourth-largest trading partner across Asia and represents Italy's leading Asian export market on a per-capita basis.

Following the implementation of the South Korea-EU free trade agreement in 2012, bilateral trade volumes have grown consistently, surging from $8.08 billion in 2012 to $12.6 billion in 2024.

The two nations forged official diplomatic relations in 1956.

Meloni arrived in Seoul from Japan as part of her three-nation tour, which featured Oman as the opening destination.
